Prof. Dr. Sayeedur Rahman
Namkhana, an island situated at the farthest south of West Bengal, is separated from the main land by the river Hataniya-Doaniya. As the academic atmosphere of this area is highly enriched, a number of students from this island are now working as high-ranking officials all around the world. There was no Govt. sponsored General Degree college in this area before the establishment of Sibani Mandal Mahavidyalaya in 2013. Before setting up of this General Degree College, the students of Namkhana island had to travel long distance and to cross rivers for admission in the colleges situated either in Kakdwip or in Sagar or Pathapratima; and, consequently, they had to face immense difficulties in continuing their higher studies uninterruptedly. The establishment of our college in this island is, therefore, a positive and glorious step particularly to meet the local demand.
In the year 2013 Sibani Mandal Mahavidyalaya was established with the sincere initiative taken by some eminent educationalist of Namkhana, and with the kind cooperation of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee. The first Governing Body of this college was formed in November, 2017. As the President of the Governing Body, nominated by the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal, I got the opportunity to visit this college for first time on 25th November, 2017. On that day I was extremely fascinated by the natural beauty of the college campus, the modest behaviour of the members of the teaching and non-teaching staff, and, finally, the enthusiastic and energetic reception by the students of this college. I observed that the eagerness of the students of this college to continue their higher studies is conscientious and the members of both the teaching and non-teaching staff appeared to be sincere, skilful and industrious in carrying out their duties and responsibilities.
As this college is new, we have to come across some problems regarding infrastructural facilities; but, with the passionate involvement of the students, teachers and the members of the non-teaching staff, we have sincerely tried to overcome those hindrances. We are committed to the innumerable students, who are not financially well-off but are genuinely keen to complete their higher studies in this area. In this college we have successfully initiated the NSS unit, that has done some remarkable jobs as social services during the cyclones, like Amphan (2020) or Yaas (2021). Seminars, conferences, excursions, cultural programmes, awareness camps, etc. have been continuously organised in our college by all departments with the cooperation of IQAC or NSS unit of our college. The academic performance of the students of our college under the newly introduced CBCS system is outstanding.
I hope that, under the proper guidance of college authority, with the sincere and dedicated services rendered by the members of both the teaching and non-teaching staff, and, finally, with the enthusiastic participation of the students in the academic and co-curricular activities of this college, this higher educational institution will soon be recognised as one of the best institutions of this area.
