History of the College
Sibani Mandal Mahavidyalaya: A Brief History
Sibani Mandal Mahavidyalaya is the only Govt. sponsored higher educational institution situated in the Namkhana Block which, if compared with the other Blocks of South 24 Parganas, has highly enriched academic and cultural atmosphere. There was a pressing need for the establishment of a Govt. sponsored General Degree college in this area, as, in earlier days, the students of Namkhana had to travel long distances to reach the nearby colleges in Sagar, Kakdwip or Patharpratima. With the kind cooperation of Smt. Mamata Banerjee, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, this college was established by securing the necessary approval of the Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal on 26 February, 2013. The college was affiliated by the University of Calcutta on 29
th July, 2013 with General courses in Bengali, English, History, Political Science and Education. Later on Honours courses were sanctioned in different subjects with necessary permission of the University of Calcutta. At present, we have Honours Courses in Bengali, History, Geography, Political Science, Education and Sanskrit; and General Courses in English, Zoology, Botany and Chemistry.
Though the college was established in 2013, preparations for setting up this institution started much before: at the beginning of 2011 a committee was formed to establish and monitor a Govt. sponsored higher education in this locality. The members of that committee were: (1) Bankim Chandra Hazra (President), (2) Shyamal Kumar Samanta (Vice President), (3) Parameswar Mandal (Secretary), (4) Srimanta Kumar Mali (Member), (5) Purnendu Shekhar Mandal (Mmber), (6) Amit Shankar Mandal (Member), (7) Sunil Kumar Mandal (Member), (8) Nirmal Chandra Sharma (Member), (9) Nityananda Das (Member). Primarily this committee arranged for the land and collected fund for the inception of this college. Within 2012 this committee arranged the land, admeasuring 5 acre 88 shatak in Namkhana Mouza, beside the National Highway 117, for the establishment of this college.
After the establishment of this college in 2013, a new committee was formed to run this college smoothly, comprising the following persons:
